Work At Home - Become A Roving Haircutter

It's a fact of life few of us escape... our hair grows. A select group of people look the other way and allow their hair to grow with abandon, but most of us search out competent hair stylists. And while some of us require specific procedures such as coloring and perming, every single one of us needs to keep our hair manageable with a good cut.

With those stats, it's easy to see that becoming a hairstylist is a job that would give you a steady supply of customers! It's one of those fundamental, ongoing needs right up there with new shoes and deodorant! In other words, it's not going away.

And it's an easy profession to learn, taking only several months in cosmetology school to obtain licensing.

But if you're already licensed, then you're already capable of becoming a roving hairstylist.

Purchase your tools and a rolling carrying case. Get some business cards made. Create a flyer of services and prices, and then... hit the streets. Market this flyer first to the area in which you reside. Always remember, the easiest customers are people who already know you.

You can cut hair in your own home or in your customer's house.

Give customers incentives to attract new customers for you, such as reduced services the next time or a flat referral fee for every new person they bring you. And take that idea further by creating a Home Hair Cutting Party.

Just like direct sales home parties, get one person to round up a minimum number of customers for you at their house on a specific day. Have them throw a party at their expense. The party-thrower gets a free haircut. Everyone else there has a great time and gets a good haircut at a good price! And you? You get free food and beverage and instant take-home pay. This is a win-win-win!

Don't forget to have someone at this party agree to set up the next party a month later!

If you managed to cut hair at one party per week, with each party consisting of 6 to 8 participants, at a rate of $15 per cut, you would pull in $90 to $120 per party... cash. While that may not sound like much, imagine if you had 2 or 3 parties each week! That would bring in anywhere in the range of $180 (2 parties/6 people each) to $360 (3 parties/8 people each). And that equates to $720 to $1440 a month!

Mind you, you can increase your price per cut, as well as increase the number of participants at each party and the number of parties each week. Your potential income is much, much greater than the outlined scenario above! At $20 per cut - still a conservative price - with 4 parties per week and 10 participants, you'd be looking at $3200 a month. Again... cash. All this for very little effort since other people are arranging the parties for you. And don't forget your reduced food bill, as each party would provide your lunch or dinner.

If you're good at your trade, you could potentially garner enough regular customers to open your own salon, fully ready to go with patrons.

This party scheme is also good for children's haircuts, since moms generally jump at the chance to have their kids' hair cut, which grows so fast, and the opportunity for getting that service so close to home, at a party no less, and not having to wait in the lobby of the local Supercuts greatly benefits busy parents! Children's cuts are much quicker also, bringing in cash even faster. The only drawback is the more limited times for parties during the week, as kids usually have school. But weekends and summer break would be a better time to incorporate children's parties.

You could also host the party yourself at your own home, inviting your customers to preregister for the event, so you could plan accordingly, though I imagine party-hosting burnout would kick in pretty quickly. However, in this manner, it would truly be a work-at-home business.

So, whether you're a licensed hairstylist or looking to become one, but afraid you won't find a job with a salon, you can always take matters literally into your own hands and create the life you're looking for.

Work At Home - The Friends & Family Plan

As Facebook, Twitter and other social media outfits are used more for commercial profit, it's becoming evident to me that this may be a bandwagon worth jumping on.

We've all received emails from our coworkers and family with that innocent little advertisement at the bottom announcing a great sale or some other exciting offer. Perhaps you're someone who thinks those advertising links magically appear or are simply the consequences of using a certain email company's free services. If so, prepare yourself for a revelation. You too can have advertising affiliate links in your emails! It's done because there is money to be made.

But allow me to take that idea several steps further and create a possibly lucrative, work-at-home solution for you.

Every one of us has a web of contacts, friends and family, that we interact with daily. Each of those people shop - food, makeup, books, clothes, kiddie shoes, toys, perfume. You name it. And increasingly, people of all ages are using the Internet to shop. Who wants to get in their car anymore, spend money on gas to arrive at a crowded store and waste time searching for items?

Now, as a shopper, if your friend, family member or neighbor had a store selling what you needed and located right next to another store where you didn't know the owner, which store would you choose? To whom would you rather give your money? Simple... the person you already know. The world revolves around these networks of familiar contacts. It's been this way since the dawn of commerce.

If you're one of those Facebook people with 100, 200, 300 or more friends, you've got an instant list of people willing and probably happy to help you out. But, do the math, and you will be mind-boggled at how many potential shoppers you have access to in your web, and also in their webs.

Now enters the innocent affiliate link to bring this idea full circle. When you sign up with an affiliate company (all for free) to become a partner, you'll have access to all the text links and image banners you could need to begin an affiliate marketer enterprise. And your immediate base of friends and family can be accessed to launch (and ultimately sustain) your new business.

All you need to do now is create a website or begin a blog. Using any of the great website companies' software, a good looking, effective website can be yours, up and running, in under a week. Your website could be constructed as an Internet shopping mall directory, for ease in locating stores and items. Break out the shopping by categories just like any retailer would do. If you're unsure of how to do this, stop in at Target.com for a breakout of categories, and copy the format. For links to the categories, you will then insert your affiliate link (complete with your personal affiliate code). When one of your friends or family members makes a purchase from a retailer, you get a percentage of the sale! And EVERY link on your website will be your affiliate link! This is like free money to you. Who wouldn't want to help you out?

It's important to note, however, that whether you choose to have a website or a free blog, you will have to post "stories" or articles on them. This is called "content". Affiliate companies do not like websites or blogs that are blatantly out for advertising revenue. To become an affiliate, your site will be checked to see whether it is legitimate or not and must first have a fair amount of articles, and you may be turned down if it looks like an advertising directory. So use your creativity and come up with interesting topics to post or discuss. Certainly one topic related to your site could be articles of bargains and sales notifications. Get a discussion going with your friends and family on your blog relating to best and worst places to shop, eat, party... whatever. A great way to get discussion going is to post an article with an intentional argument. People love to give their opinions! Use that.

Additionally, under no circumstances will your website or blog be accepted by affiliate companies if it contains profanity, pornography, postings against any groups, or slander and discrimination of people for any reason. Nothing objectionable is allowed. Keep it clean... keep it light. The goal is to make money, not offend.

When your site is loaded with categories linked to your affiliate accounts and looks all pretty, send a nice "Welcome To My Store" email to everyone who is friend or family, but only once, or this will be considered spamming. Explain your venture! Give these people the reason to shop from your website exclusively, making sure they understand how it will help you reach your dream of working from home, how it will make life easier for them as a consumer, and how you'll even help them save money by sending out or posting information regarding sales and special offers.

Keep it growing!
Once you send out the initial site, don't be tempted to sit back and see what happens. Write more articles. Put up interactive polls. Ask questions for people to answer. Get them involved. Aggravate them if you have to. And when all else fails, bring up politics to get heated discussions rolling, or take adversarial views on current events.

Also, keep one area for rotating advertisements. Switch out ads here as often as you like... changing to seasonal ads when appropriate and taking advantage of retailers who run contests or giveaways. Make your site the one your friends and family check out first, because you're on top of new promotions and have interesting, informative or entertaining articles.

Don't expect to get rich overnight. This is something you'll have to really stick to and experiment with, like any work or business venture. However, there is real potential for those who endure.

To expand the business, give your friends and family some type of incentive to spread the word on your website, or even just ask them to forward your site to their friends and family. Create your own affiliate program, whereby if Aunt Mary gets Uncle John to use your site, you promise to stop asking them for loans. Get creative and have fun.

Spread the word!
Put your new website or blog as a link in your email signature. People who don't already know will check it out. Buy a car magnet with your website or blog URL for strangers to see on your daily commute. Post your website or blog on business cards to hand out when you get around to telling others about it. Keep thinking! Also, new affiliate companies with more revenue opportunities are born every day, so get blogging with other publishers and stay up-to-date.

There's an entire world of entrepreneurs doing this for a living. You can be one of them!

Affiliate Companies to Join
To find individual companies that offer affiliate programs you can join, do a Google search.  The method that is most effective for me, however, is to check every website you come across by scrolling down to the bottom of the main page and searching for an Affiliate Program link, or anything mentioning Publishers.

Work At Home - Plant Veggie Gardens

In certain circles it would appear the current economic condition is affecting no one. People are still buying new cars, putting additions on their houses, going to movies and on vacations.

But in other circles, everything is doom and gloom, with proclamations of a Great Depression II on the horizon to exceed historical records. These predictions can be found in articles on legitimate websites like MSN Money as well as the Guy-On-The-Corner-With-A-Bullhorn variety of blogs. The message from these believers is the same: make like a boy scout and "Be Prepared".

The one tidbit of preparatory advice found on every single site I researched says that, to survive the possible coming economic hardships, grow a vegetable garden.

In hard times, we will revert back to basic needs, of which food is the most critical. With jobs becoming scarcer and money tighter, it may become difficult for many to even buy food. As an avid gardener, I'd suggest you grow a veggie garden no matter which side of the economic fence you sit on. It's rewarding any way you slice it.

But inside any situation, good or bad, there's always opportunity to profit and create a home-based business. In this case, it's helping other people be prepared. Installing veggie gardens, as well as backyard orchards (think apple, peach, pear, plum, lemon, orange...), is a relatively easy and highly prosperous business idea. If you've ever installed one yourself, then you know how easily it is done. And if you haven't, don't despair. I repeat - it's easy.

Garden plots can be priced around $200 to $400, or more, depending on the size of the plot and other features. Your customer pricing will be determined by these factors:
  • Size of plot
  • Depth of soil (for above-ground beds - *recommended")
  • Plants (whether starting out with seeds or potted plants)
  • Additional features (organic, fence, watering system, animal deterrents, etc.)
  • Labor (time and effort it will take to accomplish task & use of helpers)
As is typical with many home businesses, customers reside all around you. Begin advertising in your local neighborhoods. Many people will be glad to hire you to take care of this task, eliminating time and hassle for them. Most landscape companies consider this job too small to be worth their effort, and as such do not even offer it, unless it's added onto a larger job. And that is how you will find opportunity and customers.

Get the message out, plan how you will deliver your proposals to interested people, and how you will price your services and options. As with many businesses starting out in neighborhoods, you'll quickly learn that "neighbors talk" and word-of-mouth will get around, bringing more business your way. Be prepared for this as well. If the economy continues its downward spiral, you may find your new home-based business swamped with calls.

If you're wondering how viable a business this would be after the recession/depression, think of the lessons people are currently learning. We're all going back to the penny-pinching and do-it-yourself ways of generations past in an effort to avoid this happening to us again. Vegetable gardens and the money-saving idea of growing our own food will remain with us for a long, long time.

On a final personal note - if this Depression does occur and is as horrendous as some predict, I hope every suburban homeowner installs a veggie garden in their backyard, so that entire communities grow enough food to share with each other. Adopting this neighbor-helping-neighbor mentality will pull us through, make us stronger, and bring us closer.
